Ancient Mycenae
Mycenae: Archaeological site and Museum
Prehistoric times in Greece developed brilliant cultures. One of the most magnificent was the Mycenaean civilization, which will ultimately determine the history of not only Greece but also the entire Mediterranean.
It was developed in almost all of Greece and its most important headquarters were in Mycenae.
Starting from a tour of the archaeological site, one can admire the great palaces of Mycenae, which began to be built around 1350 BC. at the highest point of the hill. In the same chronological period, the fortification of the Acropolis began with the huge cyclopean walls, whose construction was an incomprehensible achievement for that time. A hundred years later, the Lions Gate, which represents two lions as guardians of the Acropolis, was built and is a remarkable monument for the visitor of the area. Also, remarkable monuments can be characterized as the funerary complexes of Mycenae, which consist of Grave Circle A and Circle B, which includes four vaulted tombs. One of these is the vaulted tomb known as the “treasure of Atreus”, with the tall honeycomb dome, which is yet another elaborate work of the ancient Greeks.
Also, since July 2003, the Museum of Mycenae has been constructed, where, in elegant showcases, the most important treasures and finds that excavations in the archaeological site have brought to light. However, the image of the archaeological site is completed after the tour of the surviving ruins, the most popular of which are the two burial royal enclosures A and B, the treasure of Atreus, the vaulted tomb of Clytemnestra, the Gate of the Lions, the Royal Palace , the temple, the North Gate as well as the Underground Tank. The site is protected by UNESCO and as a monument of world cultural heritage attracts thousands of people every year.
